Update

A bit busy month, but I'm still alive and ready to update Fate/Yggdrasil. The next chapter will be out soon and I hope you enjoy it! 😁 And if the question is, "But YKIR, what the fuck have you been up to this month?" then perhaps I would say that it's appropriate to update you on some things... *cough cough*... Excluding my obligations as a student and YouTube, I dedicated myself to some stories that I published on Wattpad (click here to take a look at the profile recently created) and I decided to start a project with BikoWolf... a comic ... yes.😎 We'll see how it goes.

In the meantime, why not take a look at this fanart of Gaius Julius Caesar? A pretty good Easter design. Here you will find the original work.

Chapter 21 : Close to the battle

"Are you okay, Alessandro?"
Caesar's question caught the boy off guard. They had camped in a house a few steps from an arena. The moon was dominating the night sky and both Ina and Henry were sleeping upstairs. The room, lit by some torches, held an air of tension and fear.
"I can't sleep... that's all," he replied, lowering his head. "I'd like to be as carefree as you are, you know? You can even use moments like this to try on new clothes."
"You like it?" she asked making a full circle.
"Not bad. Where did you find it?"
"Upstairs. Isn't it strange that there are clothes in my size?"
"Strange, huh? Not the word I was thinking of. By now I know how certain things work... I bet there's something underneath."
"I'm sorry," she said, sitting next to him. "I'm sorry you're forced to fight another war."
The two, in front of that table occupied by the books that Alessandro had brought with him, exchanged embittered glances; she rested her head on his shoulder.
"I'm so sorry," the girl repeated.
"It's not your fault. The fault lies with Vergil. That guy... he's like Yukiko. I told you? I saw it in his eyes the first time I saw him. People like him are evil, true evil."
"Do you have a plan—?"
"A plan? Ah! If I had a plan, I wouldn't be standing here waiting for something."
"So that's why we're here? To 'wait for something'?"
"I'm waiting for a sign... or a miracle... anything that can end this war in an instant."
"Are you serious?" she asked with grave perplexity.
"Have you seen what situation I'm in? Did you see who I have to protect? I'm afraid, Caesar... I'm really afraid of not being able to defend Ina. How can I be a shield to her? How can I protect her in such a war? How can I stop Vergil from killing her? I'm not that strong to—"
"You're too agitated, Comrade. You have to calm down. If you don't, you will make things worse. In times of crisis, you need to stop and think. Come with me."
The girl got up and, taking Alessandro by his arm, took him out of the house.
"No, wait," he exclaimed fearing for Ina's safety.
"We don't go too far, don't worry. I just want to let you breathe some fresh air, it will help you think."
The two began walking around the house. Alessandro and Caesar were surrounded only by a nocturnal silence in which thousands of deserted houses were submerged. Alessandro followed the girl like a disciple who follows the teacher. She was the first to open her mouth:
"One of my hardest battles was the one I fought in Munda, in Hispania. Do you know who I fought against? One of my best legionaries: Titus Labienus. He was, to me, a very good friend and, at times, also a good lover. But fate pitted us against each other and, in that fateful battle in Munda, I was cornered."
"How did it happen?"
"First, he knew my way of conducting a military campaign and he knew how to adapt to my strategies. Plus he had a clear numerical advantage. I had eight legions and he had thirteen. I was afraid, of course." She paused briefly. "I was very afraid of the outcome and, to be honest, I didn't even intend to fight my best friend. You know... that time I honestly thought about killing myself."
"For real?!" he exclaimed in shock.
"Yes, really. We Romans, in this sense, are very similar to the people of Tokugawa."
"Are you talking of the Japanese?"
"Yes, them," she replied, smiling. "Many Romans place a strong emphasis on their own honor and dignity. I've never worried about honor, it's stupid for me to be honorable... but at that moment there, against Labienus, I really thought about putting my ego aside and committing suicide. But I was just scared... and the fear is always brief."
"So you fought your friend in the end."
"I've often been accused of lacking in virtue... Don't get me wrong, I understand the charm of those who are virtuous, it's easier to fall in love with Socrates than with the State that punished him. However, to be honest, I've never understood the practicality of virtue. It's useful only to those who have as their goal to be remembered as a good person, but if your purpose is to change the world..."
"Are you telling me that virtue is useless?"
"Not 'useless' but irrelevant. The virtuous do not change the world, only those who are willing to make sacrifices can really change the state of things. People of virtue are little different from beautiful figurines. They are people born to be admired, but they are unable to change the world—"
"Are you talking about me?" he immediately asked.
Caesar was silent and raised her eyebrows.
"I'm right, am I?"
"You're too sharp, Comrade," she replied with a smirk.
"What are you implying, then? That I should stop protecting Ina? That I should abandon her—?"
"No," she replied gravely. "I would never ask you to do such a thing, you know that... but I know you, Comrade, and I know you don't want to kill. In the previous war you didn't even kill a Master... this time you won't be able to afford this luxury—"
"You don't know what you're saying..."
"Do you think I like this situation? Obviously I don't like to corner you like this, but you have to understand that it's time to make some sacrifices."
"I won't kill, am I clear? I have no intention of killing people, I just want to leave and take Ina to safety... away from all this."
"To protect her, you'll have to make some tough choices, do you understand? You can't save everyone. Some people have to die so that others can live—"
"These are the arguments of a tyrant!" he said aloud.
"Maybe... but that doesn't mean they're wrong."
"But I'm—"
"You only say that because you don't have the courage to admit that, in this war, you will be forced to make difficult choices. Let's not fool ourselves, Comrade, we both know that you cannot save Ina and at the same time prevent the death of all the Masters. Playing the part of the 'good guy' will get you nowhere, you have to be realistic and—"
"I'm not playing, Caesar, I'm trying to do the right thing!"
"I know, I understand..." she said regretfully. "But sometimes the right choices require sacrifices. Protecting Ina is noble, but..."
Then, the girl noticed that Alessandro had wet eyes. His look was sad, yes, but it was also tired.
"I'm sorry, Caesar..." He wiped away his tears. "I know, it's pathetic… but I'm so tired of being forced to fight. I want to live my life... I want to be free... but every time I take a breath, there is always someone who wants to choke me. Why?"
She hugged him. "I'm sorry, Comrade, I know how you feel, by now I know you..."
He hugged her. "I hate all this..."
"I know, but you have to be strong. You managed to survive the previous war and you will be able to get out of this one too. I will stay close to you and I will make you triumph." She stroked his face with a maternal sweetness. "I believe in you, Comrade."
"Thank you... I need to have you by my side until the end."
"I thought you needed Ina," she said wryly.
"Caesar!" He walked away blushing.
"Ah, I was right!" The girl laughed.
"You ruined the atmosphere!"
"But I'm right, yes? You have feelings for her, don't you?"
He said nothing, the blush on his cheeks disappeared and his face was painted with sadness.
"Are you all right, Comrade?"
Alessandro turned to her and, with a pained smile, said: "I can't do it, Caesar, I can't hurt Ina... not like this."
She frowned and asked for explanations with a puzzled expression.
"We must be frank, Caesar, I am the cause of all this. Problems follow me and anyone close to me risks getting hurt. I can not do that. I can't follow my heart and endanger Ina's life."
"It doesn't necessarily happen—"
"Avoid saying it, it sounds like an offense," he exclaimed harshly. "The truth is this: I have feelings for Ina, yes, but it can't work between us. She has to forget about me and live her life."
"You know perfectly well that she will never do it, of course that girl is in love with you. You understand it from the way she looks at you... she has the look of someone who would die for you."
Alessandro sighed. "I know, that's why, when this war is over, I'll erase her memory."

The night was still high when Vergil sat down on an Egyptian-style throne to admire the view of Adocentyn. From the top of the tower he could see how figures, shaped like stars, moved through the streets of the city, while others remained motionless in their homes. He looked at those Adocentyn stars as if they were pawns on a chessboard.
"My lord, I have just tracked down the traitorous homunculus."
Speaking was a tall guy with a scar on his face, he accompanied by a woman shorter than him.
"So you found dear and sweet Alisa. It's unfortunate that one of my works of art has to be destroyed."
"This is the just punishment for all traitors, my lord," the man said making a short bow.
"Far be it from me to deny it. Don't kill her right away, I don't want her death to be as useless as her life. I want you in the shadows, Tao, ready to divide her from her friend and to eliminate her in an altar."
"Under your orders, my lord." The man went away.
The woman, left alone with Vergil, didn't say a word for fear of disturbing him. He stood motionless admiring Adocentyn, it seemed he hadn't realized he wasn't alone. As the woman began to walk away, Vergil's voice hit her mind:
"Flee from me, Hetna? He's not very polite."
"No, I was just—"
"Don't you find it fascinating? This panorama is truly an unparalleled sight. Adocentyn, the City of the Sun." He got up and with his hand he pointed to the landscape. "Admire the circular city made up of seven impregnable walls that divide it into six circles. Contemplate the four cardinal doors and the nine altars of the Pleiades. Can you capture the divine beauty of this perfect city? In a time far from memory, people reached the foot of this tower, after having walked the highest hill in the city, only to be able to receive enlightenment and be blessed with eternal happiness."
"Why are you telling me these things—?"
"If you had to choose between Adocentyn and Yukiko, who would you choose?"
That question was like a bolt from the blue. The girl was unable to respond immediately and she panicked.
"Don't you know what to say, Hetna?"
"I... um..."
"I understand you. After all, it wasn't me who gave you a new existence, it was Yukiko. You see her as if she were a mother, don't you?"
"No... you are wrong. I don't have this affection for her,"she said nervously.
"Good. Glad to hear that from you. I also miss dear and sweet Yukiko very much, but we can't lose concentration, can we?"
"Do I have a mission?"
"Yes. You must eliminate a Master: Raphael Maillard. Kill him, have no mercy."
"It will be done."

With the rising of the sun, Alessandro, Ina and Henry left for the arena which was a few steps away from them. There was no small concern in the air. Ina was the one who trembled the most at the very idea of fighting a Master.
"What's the plan?" Henry asked curiously.
"Go in and fight," Alessandro replied immediately.
"It's not a plan."
"I don't have any better."
"It's not very reassuring..."
"I know, but I'm glad you're helping us. The more, the better," he said, smiling.
"I'm here to kill Vergil, don't forget that. Don't fraternize with me, we're just colleagues."
"Sorry," Ina began shyly, "but how did you become a Mage Hunter?"
Henry glared at the girl with an angry look. Ina's reaction was to run for cover behind Alessandro.
"In fact, I'm curious too," said Alessandro, "how do you become a Mage Hunter? Have you been chosen by someone or...?"
"I was actually like you."
"A magus?"
"Yup. I was studying in the Clock Tower."
"Oh." A profound regret was drawn on Alessandro's face.
"I had left it long before it's fall. I didn't lose any friends in that terrible disaster... let's just say I've been luckier than others."
"Why did you leave the Clock Tower, then? Problems with the institution?"
"In a sense. If by 'institution' you mean 'parents murdered in cold blood' then yes. I had 'problems with the institution'." He paused briefly. "Killers. Sent from T6, I don't know if you know that organization. Most likely they were sent from the Clock Tower to eliminate my parents."
"Why?" Alessandro asked in shock.
"Because my parents wanted to reveal the secrets of Magecraft to the world. So they were killed. I left the Clock Tower and vowed to eliminate those magi, starting with the killer who had murdered my family..."
"Who?"
"Murakawa Tetsuya."
One of the participants of the Holy Grail War of Yggdrasil which was held in London. Alessandro knew him and knew that he had been Lancer's Master.
"You know he's already dead, right?"
Henry nodded.
"Are you happy with this—?"
"No not at all. I would've preferred to kill him myself."
The time finally came. Alessandro, Ina and Henry entered the arena. At the same instant Anna Newton and Alisa crossed the thresholds. The Servants made their appearance later. Alessandro, turning to Caesar, said:
"Okay, let's try to avoid unnecessary deaths. Let's defeat the Servants and move on."
Then the image of Vergil appeared in the center of the arena.
"Son of—!"
Alessandro was already on the point of attacking him, but Vergil immediately interrupted him by raising his hand. He was not there to fight, but to talk to the participants.
"Ladies and gentlemen, before this battle begins I would like to clarify something that perhaps some of you have not yet understood." His gaze aimed at Alessandro Serpi. The boy froze. "You are not here to just fight. You're here to reach the greatest of prizes: the Holy Grail of Yggdrasil. The outcome of this battle will seal your fate in this fantastic war. But you have to know one thing: right now you're locked in here due to a magical barrier. You cannot leave the arena. There is no Magecraft or Noble Phantasm that can save you. So avoid making a bad impression." With his gaze still fixed on Alessandro, he said, showing a demonic grin: "However, there is a way to get out of here."

[ITA] Capitolo 21 : Verso la battaglia

«Stai bene, Alessandro?»
Ormai so come funzionano certe cose... scommetto che c’è qualcosa sotto.»
«Mi dispiace» disse lei sedendosi vicino a lui.
Quel tizio... lui è come Yukiko.
Ah!
«Sei troppo agitato, Commilitone. Devi calmarti.
Voglio solo farti respirare dell’aria fresca, ti aiuterà a pensare.»
I due iniziarono a passeggiare intorno all’abitazione.
«Stai parlando di me?» domandò subito.
Cesare rimase in silenzio e inarcò le sopracciglia.
«Ho ragione, vero?»
«No» rispose grave.
«Mi dispiace, Commilitone, so come ti senti, ormai ti conosco...»
I problemi mi seguono e chiunque sta vicino a me rischia di farsi male.

«Mio lord, ho appena rintracciato l’omuncolo traditore.»
«Lungi da me negarlo.
«Fuggi da me, Hetna? Non è molto educato.»
«No, stavo solo—»
«No... t-ti sbagli.

«Entrare e combattere» rispose Alessandro immediatamente.
«In realtà ero come voi.»
«Un magus?»
«Sì. Studiavo nella Torre dell’Orologio.»
«Oh.»
«No, per niente. Avrei preferito ucciderlo io stesso.»
Finalmente giunse il momento. Alessandro, Ina ed Henry entrarono nell’arena. Nello stesso istante varcarono le soglie Anna Newton e Alisa. I Servant fecero la loro apparsa successivamente. Alessandro, rivolgendosi a Cesare, disse:
Sconfiggiamo i Servant e andiamo avanti.»

Chapter 20 : Friedrich's duty

"Master, it's time."
ω Saber's cold voice woke Benjamin Palmer. The boy, dazed by sleep, realized that it was still night outside.
"Why did you wake me up now? We have to leave tomorrow, right?"
"Schedule change. I sensed a Servant nearby, I don't know if they noticed us, but we must attack immediately. Are you ready?"
"But we don't even know who they are—"
"It could be α Specter."
Benjamin's blood froze. Th Servant noticed her Master's discomfort and, placing a hand on his shoulder, she said to him:
"You must be strong, Master. If you want to win this war... you have to make sacrifices."
"I know but..."
"But...?"
"Not him," he replied gravely.
"Why? What's so special about the Master of α Specter?"
"He's my friend. I don't want to fight him and above all I don't want to kill him."
Saber reacted as if she had heard words in a foreign language. "Master... you must kill. It's a rule of war and it's necessary to eliminate all Masters to get to the Holy Grail. There's no other way—"
"It doesn't exist? Are you sure? Can't we go there and steal that Grail?"
"Steal?"
"Yes, to avoid—"
A punch hit the boy's stomach. He fell to the ground. He felt as if he had been hit by a brick.
"Why did you do that?" he said painfully.
"I'm a king, not a common thief," she exclaimed with a furious look. "If you want to be like rats, then you're nothing but meat and you will be brutally killed by the other Masters. This is the Holy Grail War and it is my duty, as a Heroic Spirit, to fight with honor and give my all."
Benjamin disagreed, but he was afraid to protest. He was aware that he had no control over ω Saber and, as if that weren't enough, he wasn't strong enough to be able to stand up to her.
The boy got to his feet and apologized to the Servant for offending her. She replied like this:
"Don't apologize to me, Master, apologize to yourself. You must never allow fear to take control of your actions."
Benjamin feigned a smile.
A few moments later, the two left the house and set out in search of the Servant.

Meanwhile, Friedrich Wolff was moving through that forest of buildings to another arena identical to the one in which he had previously fought.
"Why didn't you stop and rest?" asked α Specter. "Considering that you finished fighting just an hour ago, you really need it—"
"No," he replied gravely.
"Do you want to kill that woman that ω Assassin's Master spoke of?"
Friedrich didn't answer. He had left the arena thinking he already knew what to do, but that question got in his way like a concrete wall. He stopped and asked the Servant about it:
"What do you think I should do?"
"I don't know, you're the one who has to make the hard choices," she replied quickly.
"Are you honest?"
"I'm a demon, Master, plus I'm your Servant. I'm not interested in these human affairs. What you do to the woman is your business, I'm here to help you... consider me your weapon,"she explained.
"I started with the idea of killing her... yet... why am I doubting?"
"Because you're a good person, Master."
"Am I really? I mean, I practically killed a man in cold blood. I've never done it before—"
"You'll have to do it again, that's a fact. I hope you're aware of it."
"I would like to avoid it, do you understand? I'm not telling you that I feel particular guilt for what happened to Valfredo, that man was a dog and deserved to die... in the same way Alda also deserves to die... but I don't want to become a murderer . I'm not here for this—"
"You won't succeed," she said sharply.
He arched his eyebrows and turned to the Servant. "So you're telling me it's all in vain?"
"Let's not fool each other, we both know Vergil wants to force the Masters to kill each other in the arenas. You don't want to be a killer, I understand, but you also have to face the reality: if you don't kill... someone will kill you. This war is not made for those who have morals or who want to change the world for the better."
Α Specter's words, cynical as they might be, were true. For Friedrich digesting that bitter morsel was not easy.
"I just wish there was another way..." he murmured sadly.
"Are you thinking about your friend? ω Saber's Master?"
"Yes," replied Friedrich. "I wish one thing was clear, Specter: I will not kill him. Benjamin Palmer will live, whatever it takes. I won't kill a friend of mine to satisfy that Vergil monster..."
"I knew you would say that." Specter sighed and summoned her trusty weapon.
"Specter...?"
"Stay behind me, Master, we're being watched."
Then Friedrich perceived the mana of a magus.
Takahiro Nagasako and α Lancer appeared out of the darkness. The man, with red hair and a cigarette in his mouth, met Friedrich's eye and greeted him with false courtesy:
"Salutations. It's a nice night to take a walk, right?"
"You're right. It's a really nice night... a real shame I'll have to ruin it with a battle. Can I at least know your name?"
"Takahiro. Your name is Friedrich, right?"
"Yes, how do you know?" he investigated perplexed.
"I saw you fighting that other guy... ω Assassin's Master. You killed him mercilessly—that is, technically your Servant did it, but… well, it's the same thing."
"You don't look like an experienced magus. Are you sure you want to face me?"
"We're here to fight, aren't we? So why are we getting lost in useless chatter?"
Lancer took out her weapon and attempted to hit Friedrich, but Specter parried the blow with the blade.
"Not so fast, α Lancer..." Specter grinned.
The two Servants exchanged several blows at very high speed; the impact of metals echoed throughout the city. Lancer distanced herself from the opponent and attacked using kicks and moving her double spear with such skill that it put Specter in trouble.
As soon as Lancer's foot hit Specter's face, a blue flame appeared; Lancer was forced to jump backwards to avoid getting burned. Specter used that opening to injure the opponent in the stomach.
The wound healed in an instant.
Friedrich opened his eyes wide in dismay.
"What's going on, Master?" asked α Specter.
"She... didn't use the magical energy of her Master to regenerate the wound... but how did she do it?"
"Nothing special..." said α Lancer "This is one of my abilities: Magical Healing. I don't need to depend on my beloved to regenerate these superficial wounds."
Specter showed that demonic smile again. "Now I understand... it means I'll have to hurt you more."
Having said these words, the woman tried to wound her opponent with a frontal attack; Lancer, with impressive agility, managed to dodge the blow and counterattack with a kick. Specter fell to her feet, but she was nervous. As swift and deadly as the demonic woman was, she had a hard time hitting this warrior princess whose fighting style resembled a dance. Lancer moved gracefully and dodged attacks with ease, Specter was already losing focus.
Friedrich's Servant was knocked out by yet another kick.
"Is that all you can do?" asked Lancer mockingly. "I would've expected a lot more from someone like you, but you seem to be a disappointment."
"You know my moves very well, you saw me fighting ω Assassin..."
"Exactly. I am not a war woman, but I know how to study my opponent. You know, I'm a little sorry for Assassin... if he hadn't been forced to use his Noble Phantasm he would've surely killed you."
"Maybe... but it didn't go that way and in the end you're forced to face me."
"Don't make it seem like a problem so you embarrass yourself."
Specter jumped and fled from Lancer, she followed her into that maze of buildings.
The two Masters, meanwhile, remained motionless, facing each other, waiting for one to make the first move.
"How old are you?" Friedrich asked curiously.
"Thirty-six," he replied curtly.
"I understand. I don't want to mind your business, but why are you fighting this war? You don't seem like a bad person to me... you are certainly better than Valfredo. You don't come from a family of magi, do you?"
"You're right… it took me a long time to train myself in Magecraft. Magic books, meditation and practice... lots of practice."
"And do you want to waste all this effort just for the Holy Grail?" he asked puzzled.
"What else can we do? We're here now, aren't we? We are forced to fight... so we fight."
"There is always a choice—"
"No, you're wrong. There is no freedom of choice. Freedom has a price and too many people in this world cannot afford to pay for it. Don't tell me we're free, we're not."
"So are you really going to play Vergil's game?"
"Yes."
Friedrich sighed. "I'm not." He ran away from Takahiro.
"Not so fast, you bastard!" He chased after him.

Meanwhile α Lancer was looking for α Specter. She could no longer feel her, but she was sure she was still nearby. Shee didn't plan to kill her, not without an overwhelming advantage, but she wanted to humiliate her and prove to Takahiro that she was a powerful Heroic Spirit.
"You concealed your presence, didn't you?"
No reply.
"Well, do as you please! I'll be able to find you sooner or later, you can't escape from me."
Lancer wandered the streets like an aimless rat. Every time she turned the corner she was preparing for an attack. She searched every building, every street, every roof... Specter wasn't there. Lancer was getting nervous.
"Come out, coward!"
No reply. No movement.
"So this is how you're going to deal with me? Are you hiding like a worm? You disgust me, α Specter. You're a Servant, you should face me—!"
Lancer was wounded in the back.
"Got you!" Specter exclaimed with a demonic grin. "Now you're mine!"
Lancer jumped to dodge the opponent's attack; the wound regenerated, but slowly.
"In the end you showed yourself, demon. You'll pay for attacking me!"
Specter wrapped her weapon in blue flames. Lancer prepared to strike back. The demon, therefore, set off to attack, with the blade unsheathed, but, instead of wounding the opponent, she cut two buildings in half; the impact of the two structures raised a thick cloud of dust.
Lancer saw the enemy's weapon fly at her; she dodged with agility, but was hit by a kick while still in midair. The Egyptian princess fell to her feet and performed a split to avoid the attack of the demonic woman, then she got up easily and, having performed a jump, kicked her face. Specter managed not to fall and prepared to answer.
At that moment, the figure of Vergil appeared out of nowhere. As soon as the two Masters, who had just arrived, recognized the man, they ordered their respective Servants to attack him.
"It's not very polite to do that."
He blocked both Servants' weapons using only his bare hands. The two women, startled, walked away from him.
"There is something really strange about him, my beloved," Lancer said in alarm. "I don't know why... but he looks like a Servant... a Heroic Spirit like us."
"Impossible..." Takahiro commented in a low voice. "And where the hell is the Master?"
"What do you want, Vergil?" Friedrich exclaimed furiously.
"I'm here to stop you from killing yourselves outside the arena," he replied politely and outspoken. "It would be a real shame if your deaths were wasted. Every departure, after all, has a value. In this wonderful war, everything must go perfectly. I cannot let our destinies be shattered by wrong... choices."
"Go to hell, monster! I'm not going to play your fucking game—!"
"You always use that word to describe this war... I'm really worrying about your sanity. How can you define war as a 'game'? War is tragic and should not be treated as if it were a joke."
"You talk as if you were a normal person... but you're the same stuff as Yukiko. You too, like her, are only looking for destruction—"
"And this is where you're wrong, Friedrich. I'm not looking for destruction... I want to create a new world."
"Impossible. I know how the Holy Grail of Yggdrasil works... it cannot be used to fulfill wishes. As soon as you summon it, Nidhogg will come out of there and destroy the world to create a new one. It is stuck in an infinite cycle due to the 'miraculous' power of that Grail."
"Someone has done their homework." He smiled showing a false complacency. "The problem is that you have studied the wrong books. What you know... what you think you know is not the truth. The truth is more complex and much more fascinating."
"What are you talking about...?" he asked puzzled.
"Do you want to find out? All you have to do is join me at the top of the tower. But the way won't show if you don't kill. As easy as drinking a glass of water. I'll wait for you, my dear little cub."
Vergil disappeared.
Friedrich noticed that Takahiro and α Lancer had also left.
"So what do we do, Master?" asked α Specter.
Friedrich was stunned by Vergil's words. In that sea of questions that stormed his mind, only one thing was certain: he had to find out what was really going on.
"Let's go on," Friedrich replied firmly.

I loved describing the fight between Specter and Lancer. I have a weakness for those fighting styles that combine martial arts and dance.😋 Anyway, if you want to read Fate/Yggdrasil you can download the PDF on this page to discover the prequel.

È domani che dobbiamo partire, no?»
«Rubare?»
«Sì, per evitare di—»
Un pugno colpì lo stomaco del ragazzo. Egli cadde a terra.

«No» rispose grave.
«Specter...?»
«Stai dietro di me, Master, siamo osservati.»
Dall’oscurità apparvero Takahiro Nagasako e α Lancer.
Posso almeno sapere come ti chiami?»
«Takahiro. Tu ti chiami Friedrich, giusto?»
«Sì, come fai a saperlo?» indagò perplesso.
«Siamo qui per combattere, no? Quindi perché ci stiamo perdendo in inutili chiacchiere?»
Ormai siamo qui, no? Siamo costretti a combattere... quindi combattiamo.»
«C’è sempre una scelta—»
«No, ti sbagli.

Nessuna risposta.
«Beh, fa’ come ti pare!
«Ora sei mia!»
«Impossibile...» commentò Takahiro a bassa voce.
«Vai all’inferno, mostro!
Vergil scomparve.
«Procediamo» rispose Friedrich deciso.

Chapter 19 : A new enemy

Orestes was dead.
Valfredo still couldn't believe it.
"Surrender," Friedrich said. "Now it doesn't make sense to fight anymore."
"So... are you going to kill me?" he asked terrified. "You will never be able to face Alda, she's too strong for you—"
"Where does this sudden concern come from? Has being one step away from death made you more human, Valfredo? A really strange thing for people like you."
"Oh, so that's what you've come to..." he commented disappointedly. "Now you treat us as if we weren't human."
"Spare me the crocodile tears, the Rote Mäntel have always discriminated against human beings. Have you forgotten? I didn't. I will never forget the talk about the inferiority of humanity and the need to enslave those who don't know Magecraft."
"I didn't make those speeches—!"
"But it was you who spoke to me about loyalty. You are loyal to the Rote Mäntel, aren't you? You never question authority, do you? Then you're true to those ideas. Then you don't question those who put them into action. So you're like all the other magi who work for the Rote Mäntel."
"I was just trying to survive—!"
"Bullshit! This is all bullshit and you know it very well. You were never ashamed of being loyal to those killers, you never thought of criticizing them or doubting their actions. No. You always justified them. You are like them, Valfredo."
"So this is how you want to end it? Do you want to kill me? I thought you weren't that kind of person..."
"I am not, in fact... but I know how to make certain sacrifices, especially when it comes to sacrificing garbage for the good of all humanity. You and your friends have always spat in the faces of human beings, as far as I'm concerned you don't deserve a shred of pity. No. Compassion is given to those who know how to show it in turn, but the Rote Mäntel don't know pity or benevolence. You treat humans like cattle and, as if that weren't enough, you kill each other. You're just good at destroying. How can you feel compassion for people like you?"
Valfredo gave a barely audible chuckle.
"Do you find it funny?" he asked irritably.
"More than you think, Friedrich. You're right... we kill each other. You're right. Speaking of which... do you still remember your brother Clovis?"
That name sparked an aggressive reaction in Friedrich. A punch hit Valfredo's face.
"Don't you dare mention my brother, you piece of garbage!"
"Well, it doesn't matter now... I'll die anyway, so I might as well tell you the truth: your brother's death was, in a sense, premeditated."
"My brother committed suicide—"
"Because he had lost his daughter, right? Little Freda had fallen ill with tuberculosis, one of the worst possible diseases. Coincidence? No, my friend... that disease was Alda's idea."
"What?!" he exclaimed in shock. "What the fuck are you saying?!"
"I'm only telling the truth, Friedrich. Alda used Magecraft to make Freda sick and force Clovis to commit suicide. It was all her plan—"
"Bullshit!" Friedrich shouted. "No sane person would make a child suffer like that just to commit political murder! No sane person!"
"Well, Alda has never really been 'sane'... you know that too..." he said with a grin.
"Son of a bitch!" Friedrich hit Valfredo in the face. "You're a fucking son of a bitch! You are all monsters! Fucking psychos! Tell me why I should have pity on you, Valfredo! Fuck no, you can forget it! I will have no mercy...!"
Friedrich, then, saw a strange satisfaction that was painting the man's face. The anger began, little by little, to subside. Friedrich lowered his fist.
"But that's what you want... isn't it? You want me to kill you, don't you? You want to force me to go down to your level..."
"If you want you can also keep me alive... after all, I'm in no hurry to get out of here, are you?"
"Be quiet. You make me sick, Valfredo," he said in disgust.
"Don't blame me, it was Alda's work—"
"And you? You followed her. You are on her side. You defended her. Think you can wash your hands like this? No, forget it. You are to blame as much as she is, Valfredo. I won't let you live, I can't... and I can't let someone like Alda live. Letting her breathe would be like insulting my brother and niece. I can not."
"Then kill me, Friedrich. What are you waiting for? Come on! Let's get it over with and kill me! What does it cost you? I know why you hesitate! You are afraid of being like us, but in truth you are only holding back a murderous instinct that is latent in your soul. But look at you…" He paused briefly with an amused laugh. "Look at you, Friedrich! You're pathetic! You play at being a hero... at being... at being... what are you? The defender of humanity? The protector of those fragile and decaying human societies? What are you, Friedrich? What do you pretend to be? Stop hiding and embrace your true nature. You're like me, you're like Alda, you're like all the magi of the Rote Mäntel."
Friedrich saw Specter approaching. The woman had assumed her original appearance and had just brandished her weapon. Friedrich moved away from Valfredo and exchanged a quick glance with the Servant; she immediately understood what to do.
Friedrich went away and α Specter approached Valfredo, who exclaimed:
"You'll still be a killer, even if she's the one who kills me."
Friedrich didn't answer.
Specter beheaded Valfredo.
The blood that bathed the arena made that blue lighting change into a red one. A rumble announced the disappearance of the magical barrier that had isolated the arena.
Friedrich didn't allow one last look at the body of his enemy. He left the place followed by Specter.
"Are you okay, Master?"
"I'm tired. All this suffering has to stop."

The entire battle between Valfredo and Friedrich had had a man who was well hidden as the spectator. His name was Takahiro Nagasako, the Master of α Lancer.
He had already got an idea of the strength of his future opponent, but he didn't know how to attack him or where to attack him. The whole Adocentyn looked like a labyrinth of buildings, making a battle in such an awkward place was really risky, but at the same time profitable.
"Hit and run..." Takahiro reflected, lighting a cigarette. "I can use the city to my advantage: I attack him and leave."
As soon as he entered the arena where Friedrich had fought, he sat down on one of the seats for the public. Next to him appeared Lancer, a Servant with Egyptian features and adorned like a warrior princess.
"So this is your plan, my beloved?"
"Yes, more or less." He rested his head on her legs. "I don't want to face him without first knowing if I have what it takes to win. Hit and run. This is the plan, princess."
"And what if you find out he's stronger than you?"
"Then I'll have to change my focus and take care of the weaker Masters," he replied quickly.
"A very good plan, my beloved." She stroked his head lovingly. "So you can make your wish come true."
He didn't say anything.
"You have a wish, don't you? Money? Fame? Power, perhaps?"
"Fame and power are useless, while I don't need money. I've never had any and I've never regretted their absence."
"So why are you fighting?" she asked curiously.
"First of all because I was forced, and second..." He paused briefly. "If there really is an object capable of fulfilling every wish, I want to use its miraculous powers to do good to people."
"For example?"
"Anything that makes this world a better place, I still have to think about it," he replied.
"Do you want to be a champion for others, my beloved?"
"I don't want to be a champion, I just want to do the right thing." He got up and put out his cigarette. "I lost everything when my father wasted an entire inheritance on gambling. I grew up on the street with my older brother, Yuji. I know what it means to suffer, I know what it feels like to be an outcast... the world is full of people like me."
The Servant immediately noticed that her Master's expression had changed; melancholy had impressed itself on his face. "Are you all right, my beloved?"
"I was thinking... of one thing..."
"May I know what it is?"
"A year has passed. Only a year has passed since Yuji's death."
"Do you have other relatives?"
"My mother died when she gave birth to me and my father committed suicide when he found out that he would never be able to pay all of his debts. Cousins? Never had. Uncles? Few and almost all too stingy to help anyone like me. A nice family picture, isn't it? I don't have anyone and I don't need anyone."
"You need me, my beloved," she said in a caressing tone.
"To win this war, of course."
"A war that we cannot lose, I would like to add. I've seen α Specter's abilities, she's strong enough... but her defense lacks substance, if you understand me. She has no technique and is also someone who tends to underestimate her opponents."
"You have a good eye, princess."
"My father often told me so. I suggest avoiding a prolonged confrontation. I think I understand Specter's weaknesses, but her Master is another story. That guy is really... peculiar. He has the spirit of a warrior, but also the soul of a hermit. A strange combination."
"So?"
"You have to be careful of such distinctive characters, they are the most problematic."
Takahiro lit another cigarette. A plan to attack Friedrich Wolff began to take shape in his head. He turned to α Lancer and said:
"Okay, I'll be careful. But I want to try to corner them, what do you think?"
"I'll do what you want, my beloved, and if things go wrong, I'll take care of saving you."
The woman stood up. She stroked her Master's face and kissed him on the lips. He accepted that gesture, but didn't give it a romantic value; he had no particular feelings for his Servant. For Takahiro, her attitude was little different from a computer program. It was a standardized course of action with no real meaning. He agreed to be treated as α Lancer's lover and accepted that kiss; but both were empty boxes to him.
As soon as the lips parted, she said with a smile:
"My beloved Master, I will accompany you in this war and dedicate all of myself to your desire."
Lancer's devotion, as touching as it might be, did not open a breach in Takahiro's heart. He kissed her. She clung to him with her arms as he barely touched her hips.
There was no passion in Takahiro's gestures. It was just work.

Tu sei fedele ai Rote Mäntel, no? Tu non metti mai in discussione l’autorità, no? Allora sei fedele a quelle idee.
No. Li hai sempre giustificati.
Siete solo bravi a distruggere.
Hai ragione... noi ci ammazziamo a vicenda. Hai proprio ragione.
Friedrich colpì Valfredo in faccia. «Sei un fottuto figlio di puttana! Siete tutti dei mostri! Fottuti psicopatici!
No, scordatelo. Lasciarla respirare sarebbe come insultare mio fratello e mia nipote. Non posso.»
«Allora uccidimi, Friedrich. Cosa aspetti? Avanti! Facciamola finita e uccidimi! Cosa ti costa? Io lo so perché esiti! «Guardati, Friedrich! Sei patetico! Giochi a fare l’eroe... a fare... a fare... cosa sei? Sei come me, sei come Alda, sei come tutti i magi dei Rote Mäntel.»
Friedrich vide α Specter avvicinarsi.

«Hai buon occhio, principessa.»
Però voglio provare a metterli all’angolo, tu cosa ne pensi?»
